Lions Day With the United Nations

Description:

Lions Clubs International celebrate the 30th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations in March, 2008 – and the decades long partnership between the two organizations, focused exclusively on humanitarian endeavors worldwide. A majestic sculpted lion’s head, framed by the laurel wreath symbol of peace, is adorned by a golden “We Serve” medallion. Thirty outwalkers surround the float, bearing the flags of United Nation member nations.

A 30-foot long red-tipped white cane reminds parade viewers of Lions Clubs 90 year fight against preventable blindness. The yellow ribbon encircling the cane contains several symbols of the battle against blindness, including seeing eye dogs, eye care exams, and a portrait of Helen Keller, who first challenged the Lions Clubs to become knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. This is the 21st Rose Parade float entry sponsored by the Lions Clubs.

The gigantic cane is created using everlasting and carnation petals. The swirling ribbon is made up of yellow straw flower and the pictures are created with various combinations of straw flowers, rice, statice, split pea, crushed walnut shells, clover seed, onion seed, herbs and spices.

The 2007 Lions Float is titled “Sight First” as part of the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade theme “Our Good Nature.”

•The Float depicts a large “White Cane” symbolizing Lions primary focus on helping those with vision problems to get the help they need to lead productive lives and to work to prevent blindness and vision problems throughout the world. Around the white cane is a ribbon depicting key aspects of Lionism including Helen Keller who challenged Lions to become “the Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” at our International Convention in 1925.

•Campaign SightFirst II is an ambitious project to raise over $150 M (US$) over three years to combat blindness and vision problems around the world. Its predecessor program, SightFirst I, started in 1990, raised $143.5 million as a global initiative to fight the major causes of preventable and reversible blindness. These funds provided more than 5 million cataract surgeries, built or expanded 207 eye hospitals, supported more than 70 million treatments to prevent river blindness, and improved eye care in 89 countries around the world. SightFirst II will do even more.

•Riding the float will be our current International President, Lion Jimmy M. Ross and his wife Velda, along with two selected young members of our local LEO Clubs that provide Lions experiences for our youth.
